VINEYARD Davis Bynum Pinot Noirs showcase the unique terroir of distinct sites in the Russian River Valley. The 2017 Dutton Ranches Pinot Noir comes from the Dutton Lorenzo vineyard in the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley AVA, a cool climate area just south of Forestville, CA. The vines grow in the fabled Goldridge sandy loam, common to this area of the Russian River Valley. THE HARVEST The localrecord for precipitation was set during the winter and spring of 2016-2017 as waves of showers swept over northern California, resulting in twice what we normally get. Consequently, flowering and crop set was irregularwith lower yields than average. The summer was warm to hot, with sunny days in the Russian River Valley punctuated by heat spikes, and elevated nighttime temperatures leading up to harvest. WINEMAKING This is our inaugural vintage of Dutton Ranches Pinot Noir, which showcases the briary fruit tones and higher acidity from grapes grown in a cooler area of the Russian River Valley. The Dijon clones 667 and 115 dominate the fruit profile while the Pommard clone adds a silky texture to the mid-palette and finish. A dose of new French oak provides complexity and balance to the fruit and acidity of the grapes. TASTE PROFILE Earthy aromas of leather, strawberry and rhubarb lead to a medium body with notes of strawberry, juicy blue fruit and a hint of spice. The wine ends with a long finish of red fruit, lingering acidity and velvety tannins. Savor this inaugural wine with goat cheese crostini topped with wild mushrooms, rosemary crusted lamb shanks or your favorite sharp cheese.
